"Liquid Bacon" Märzen Rauchbier
Marin Brewing Company will have a new lager arriving just in time for SF Beer Week! Our take on Bamberg, Germany's famous smoked beer, "Liquid Bacon", is a Märzen-type lager brewed with Beechwood-smoked malt. With an orange-amber hue and a rich, smoky aroma which reminds one of smoked bacon, our Rauchbier has refined lager qualities, and complementary biscuity and light caramel flavors that take the acrid edge off of the smoky malts.
While in Bamberg recently, Betz and I stayed two doors down from the famous Schlenkerla brewery, and found their Märzen Rauchbier to be the perfect breakfast beverage. For the uninitiated, it may take a pint or two to adjust to the intense palate, but at that point, I suspect you will be hooked, as we were.
The Schlenkerla Märzen is quite dark and is made entirely with malt smoked at their facility. Our interpretation of the style will more closely resemble the somewhat less intense Rauchbier made at Spezial Brewery on the other side of town. All of the malted barley used in "Liquid Bacon" was processed and smoked at Weyermann Maltings in Bamberg. A splash of Hallertau Mittelfruh hops were added to the kettle for a balancing bitterness and a hint of noble hop character. This brew tests out at 5.6% Alcohol By Volume and 24 International Bitterness Units.
Drink 'em if you got 'em!
